Semantic Media - Smart Media for the Semantic Web
The purpose of this site is to provide resources and information relating to Semantic Media, or "Smart Media", which we feel is a friendlier term.
Semantic Media is rich media content that is produced for use across the semantic web - particularly unstructured rich content such as articles, books, video and audio.
This site is intended as a starting point. We hope to add more resources over time, but its mission from the start is very simple - to provide a hub for resources and information.
The project is being sponsored and supported by itechne as part of its R&D efforts.
Getting Started with The Semantic Web
A pre-requisite to understanding Semantic or Smart Media is an understanding of the Semantic Web.
When people discuss the semantic web, there are really two things they mean:
1) The official Semantic Web - aimed at making the web more queryable.
2) The unofficial, lower-case semantic web - with tagging, microformats and various baby steps.
The Official (Scary) Semantic Web - Key resources
A Semantic Web Primer, 2nd edition Grigoris Antoniou and Frank van HarmelenAlthough it is a fairly dry read and intended as a text book, this is a seminal work and the introductory sections provide a great overview.
It is available for pre-order in its 2nd edition from amazon.com here.
Wikipedia - The Semantic Web
Provides a good overview at:

W3C - The Semantic Web
Contains a lot of hard-core technical information, but also offers some of the key original concepts on which the area is based.

Microformats.orgOutlines a set of simple, open data formats built upon existing and widely adopted standards.

POSH - Plain Old Semantic HTML
Microformats are a subset of POSH - which provides a simple but powerful framework for semantic purposes right now.
